De vokser som bittesmå svampe, der spredes gennem luften ved hjælp af sporer. Når en overflade så er fugtig nok, kan sporene udvikle sig til svamp. Da skimmelsvamp lever af organisk materiale, trives de glimrende på træ, spånplader, gipsplader, krydsfiner, tapet – også bagved, lim, maling og støv.

Oftest er det nemt at få øje på skimmelsvamp, fordi de sidder synligt på lofter, gulve og vægge, men de kan også trives og gro steder, hvor man har sværere ved at se dem. Man finder ofte svimmelsvamp følgende steder:

Her skal man ofte fjerne nogle ting for at se dem. Man vil da få øje på skimmelsvamp, hvis de er der, som pletter eller skjolder, der kan være grønne, gule, røde, grå, sorte, brune eller hvide og tit har en lodden overflade. Hvis svamp har taget samme farve som den overflade, de gror på, kan de være svære at få øje på.

Udover at man kan se dem, enten direkte eller ved at løfte paneler, tapet osv, kan man også oftest lugte skimmelsvamp som en karakteristisk muggen lugt.

De fleste vil gerne have fjernet synlig skimmelsvamp, da det skæmmer, men også den svamp, der er usynlig, bør fjernes. Skimmelsvamp er usund for mennesker, ikke mindst for de, der har allergi og astma.

Årsagen til, at de gør os syge er, at skimmelsvamp indeholder og frigiver en række stoffer, hvoraf nogle er giftige. Det kan give forskellige symptomer som kløende øjne, irriterede luftveje og næse, forkølelse, træthed, hovedpine, svimmelhed og koncentrationsbesvær. Hvis man er allergiker eller astmatiker, er man mere følsom over for skimmelsvamp.

Som mennesker reagerer vi forskelligt på de forskellige typer af skimmelsvamp, der findes. Man vurderer, at 3-6% af befolkningen er deciderede allergiske over for skimmelsvamp, men uanset hvad, er skimmelsvamp usundt for alle, blot i varierende grad.

Du kan selv gøre en del for at undgå, at skimmelsvamp kan trives i din bolig. Først og fremmest kan du sørge for, at der ikke er for fugtigt. Det er vigtigt, at alle rum er velventilerede, også kælderrum. Sørg for, at der ikke står f.eks. møbler foran en kold ydervæg, og sørg altid for god udluftning og god ventilation fra kælder til loft og i alle rum.
